Photography Workshops

I run innovative, hands-on BigBuzz digital photography workshops for children, for families and for adults, in which I show you how to take great nature photos with compact digital cameras or camera  phones.

‘Your photography workshops were absolutely brilliant! You have a fantastic way with people, getting them involved and building their confidence, which is just
what kids like these need so thank you!’
Jonathan Dent, York Environment Centre

What makes me qualified to run photography workshops?
The photos I take with my compact digital camera have been used in calendars, books, newspapers and magazines by, for example:

as well as in the scientific literature, and in my own BigBuzz shows, book, cards and calendars.

Why choose a BigBuzz photography workshop?
I have developed a unique BigBuzz photography technique. It’s quick and  fun to learn, easy to remember and produces instant results - that will get better and better the more photos you take.

‘I think you’ve got me hooked!’
Lesley, National Insect Week

What ages are the workshops suitable for?
I run workshops for children, families or adults, tailoring the content  to the age group. In a school setting, Year 3 children would be the youngest I would recommend holding a workshop for, but in family  settings, children younger than that have taken some fantastic photos!  The flowers below were photographed by James, age 5!

Where do the BigBuzz photography workshops take place?
I can bring a BigBuzz photography workshop to your school, park, environment centre, place of work ... or, if you live in the York area, it can be run at York Environment Centre, which has 24 acres of nature reserve in which you can put your new-found photography skills into practice!

Do we need our own equipment?
If you have your own camera/camera phone, then it’s best to bring that along, so you are getting to know the camera you will be using after the workshop. However, I have three cameras I can bring along for  participants to use. I also bring along:

  • a selection of tripods
  • colour photo printers
  • photo paper.

This means everyone should get the chance to print off some  photos during the workshop that others can admire there and then, and that they can take home with them afterwards.

Do you come into schools?
Yes! Into primary and secondary schools. Find out more about workshops I’ve run in primary schools here. These sessions boost pupils’ observation skills and their confidence as well as teaching them how to take photographs - like these ones taken  by KS2 pupils:

Why would we put on a BigBuzz photography workshop?

  • To kick start a photography competition.
  • As part of a KS2 Science Week or Green Week.
  • At the start of a GCSE photography course.
  • As an awayday treat for your employees.
  • To upskill your adult volunteer park rangers, or members of your children’s wildlife group.
  • As a birthday party for your child.

And umpteen more reasons besides ...

Whatever the reason, my goal is always the same: to inspire  the participants, and to leave them buzzing with excitement and enthusiasm for photography.

How long does a workshop last?
How long have you got? A couple of hours would be the minimum time I would recommend. A half a day is good. A whole day is very good. Or you might want to do two 2-hour sessions a week apart, to give participants time to practise inbetween.

Do you do workshops for adults?
Yes!

Do you just teach how to take nature photos?
No. The techniques I teach are equally applicable to other forms of  photography. I also run a special workshop on taking photos of people.
